3 Mobile broadband users with Skype on 3 function have clocked more then 1 billion call minutes since Skype’s introduction on 3.
The 1 billionth call was put through by Minister for Digital Britain, Stephen Timms, to Merlin, an organization working for Haiti Relief Fund. The call clocked the milestone for 3 Mobile phones.
The call signified the only means of communication that was possible in Haiti after the disastrous earthquake destroyed practically every phone line on the island. Mobile internet service was the only possible communication for the survivors.
3 Store reported that more then 3 million minute calls are made per minute using Skype on 3 .
Mr Timms said: “Digital Britain sets out a framework for the modernisation and growth of the UK’s communications infrastructure. This will enable internet technologies such as Skype to thrive, ensuring Britain sustains its position as a leading digital economy.”
The Skype on 3 was launched in May 2009 and the cheap nature of the calls has made the service particularly popular in UK.
